Five co-operatives which have helped feed about 7000 people daily since the municipality started its feeding programme this year received their fair share of groceries today as a token of the municipality’s appreciation for their commitment.
The five cooperatives from five wards in the city have been cooking and serving food to their fellow neighbours since August this year, when the Ten Million Rand War on Hunger campaign was introduced.
Speaking at the closing ceremony today, Executive Mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, thanked the 123 volunteers (114 woman and nine Men) who worked tirelessly each day in often extremely challenging conditions to prepare and serve food to the most vulnerable members of their community.
“The fact that such a high number of people are saved daily from sleeping with an empty and excruciatingly painful stomach is a great achievement for us as the municipality and those that have assisted us in the process,” said Wayile.
“Working together we need to build a caring society that touches lives of each and every citizen of the city, more especially woman and children. I call on the private sector to partner with us in eradicating hunger and empowering our people. Looking back at the road we have travelled since we launched the War on Hunger Programme, strides have been made, but there is still a lot to be done in making people who are part of the programme self-sufficient,” said Wayile.
