Van de Ryst Pips de Kort

20 December 2010 By Zports

www.MyPE.co.za: The first round of the EPTA Summer Series triathlon was won by Gauteng student Corney van de Ryst from Nelson Mandela Bay’s Jack de Kort and Ryan Peter. Van de Ryst who is a top national age group triathlete, paced himself well behind the experienced de Kort during the 750m swim and 20km cycle leg before making a lightning fast transition between the cycle leg and the 5km run leg to take the lead and complete the race in 1hr 6min. De Kort did extremely well to hang onto 2nd place, finishing just 1min 19sec later, with a fast chasing Peter finishing just 19 seconds behind.

Liza Bright had things all her own way in the ladies race, finishing in a time of 1hr 15min and placing 12th overall. Ingrid Brown finished 2nd in the ladies category in a time of 1hr 20min with Melanie Norden in 3rd place in 1hr 29min. 16 year old Keagan Scott was the first junior home in a time of 1hr 19min, placing 18th overall.

“It’s been a frustrating start to this year’s Summer Triathlon Series, ” said Series organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports, “Round 1, which was scheduled for last Thursday morning, had to be postponed due to extreme weather conditions and then Saturday’s event was delayed by an hour due to heavy mist over the sea making the scheduled swim start impossible.”

A fun aquathlon consisting of a 1km run, 100m swim and ending with another 1km run is held in conjunction with the Summer Series triathlon and this was won by the Riddle siblings, Camryn and Jamie. Jarryd Gough and Matthew Grobbelaar placed 2nd and 3rd in the boys category with Crystal Hulett and Kelsey Vaughan taking the silver and bronze in the girls race.

Round 2 of the Series will take place on Wednesday morning, 22 December at Marina Martinique at 9.30am with Round 3 concluding the Series on Sunday, 26 December at Port St Francis. The Series is open to teams and individuals and online entry can be made on www.TriSummerSeries.co.za and late entries will be taken on race days.
