Urban development and ownership patterns in Red Location and New Brighton, Port Elizabeth

The NMMU Department of Development Studies will be hosting a lunchtime semninar by PhD Student, Marta Montanini on 24 July. Marta will be speaking on Planning the intangible: urban development and ownership patterns in Red Location and New Brighton, Port Elizabeth

The seminar will present the preliminary findings of the fieldwork that Marta Montanini, a visiting PhD student from the University of Turin, in Italy, has been conducting in New Brighton, with the support of Eusa_Id mobility program and seeks to answer these questions:

What do political leaders, public officers and professionals think about when they design and remake the marginal urban spaces for the sake of development? In the best of cases, they base themselves on the assumption that multisectoral interventions, economic inclusion and a more effective service delivery will lead to growth and wellbeing. Making use of different degrees of public participation, they imply that if the residents are engaged in the different phases, they will take ownership of the project.

But what does really mean to take ownership of a project, a building, an organization, an idea? And how do people perform ownership in their everyday life? Which kind of outcomes do ownership practices generate? Which kind of inclusion-exclusion patterns? And how does ownership intersect and interact with local and national politics, history, memory, identity and belonging?

Marta Montanini is a PhD student looking at Social and Political change under the Department of Politics, Cultures and Societies at the University of Turin. She is a Visiting PhD student with the EUSA_ID program with The Department of Development Studies at NMMU.

The seminar will be presented at the NMMU Missionvale Campus from 12h00 to 13h00 on Friday 24 July.
