It is all systems go for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality when it comes to the implementation of this years Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup that will take place this Saturday, 17 September.
Reputable companies such as Pick n Pay, Plastics South Africa, Coca-Cola, Woolworths, Rip Curl and ODI amongst many others, pulled their weight with the municipality’s Beach Office, the local coordinating unit for this project that has been in existence for more the last 25 years to ensure success on a local level.
Godfrey Murrel from Beach Office correlates data on a local level and provides the required information to the Department of Environment, Agriculture and Tourism, the national implementers of this programme as well as Plastics South Africa.
More than 6 000 yellow plastic bags have been distributed to organizations and individuals since Monday and last year more than 1 500 volunteers showed that they cared about the environment by cleaning up rubbish on beaches.
This year we are once again targeting beaches from Van Stadens River Mouth to the pristine beaches at Colchester.
During September each year hundreds of thousands of volunteers from more than 150 countries all over the world roll up their sleeves for this event.
