Traffic Department Chalks up 200 Prosecutions Over the Weekend

The Traffic Department of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality showed its mettle over the weekend when a total of 227 prosecutions took place over the weekend. These offences included 19 cases of driving under the influence, 49 unlicensed drivers, 26 speeding offences, 3 reckless and negligent driving, 1 culpable homicide and 15 unlicensed or unregistered vehicles.

The roadblocks are an indication of the seriousness of the Traffic Department when it comes to prosecuting lawless motorists. The Municipality’s Traffic and Licensing Director, Mr Hamilton Totoyi, said that efforts will be stepped up to ensure that a zero tolerance approach will be enforced while hosting the Spec-savers Ironman South Africa and the Easter Weekend.

Other prosecutions included 11 cases of stopping and causing danger/obstruction, 11 cases of not wearing seatbelts or crash helmets, 8 prosecutions of traffic lights disobedience and 5 overloaded passenger vehicles.
