It is fair to say that the NSRI is at the sharp end of saving lives at sea. Every port in South Africa boasts an NSRI Station. These stations are staffed by UNPAID volunteers and rely on generous donations from business and the public at large to stay afloat.
Oftentimes TNPA Harbour Masters will despatch NSRI Crews to rescue seafarers at sea, transport injured crew and perform vital life saving operations in all manner of conditions. These selfless acts by unpaid volunteers support the very large business that is the TNPA and allow coastal airports to stay open – yes, for example, if Gqeberha had to lose it’s NSRI Station 6 there is a very real chance that the airport could lose it’s status as an international one!
So – I find it gratifying that the TNPA are supporting Station 6 as follows:
A collaboration between the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) will see an improvement in emergency rescue services and water safety education, thanks to the generous donation of much-need equipment made by TNPA’s Nelson Mandela Bay Ports to the NSRI.
The donated equipment includes a generator, office equipment, crew saver life jackets, emergency lights, handheld Very High Frequency (VHF) radios and cleaning materials.
At a handover ceremony of the equipment, the NSRI Regional Operations Manager, Ian Gray said: “The collaboration represents what makes a difference to the people we serve. Saving lives is part of our ethos and we are grateful to the ports for their continued support.”
TNPA and the NSRI have a long-standing relationship premised on a common objective of ensuring waterside safety in and outside of the port limits.
“One of the strongly felt moral obligations amongst seafarers is the wellbeing and rescue of persons in peril at sea. As Nelson Mandela Bay Ports, we remain committed to this noble duty, and we view Corporate Social Investment as an effective vehicle to support organisations aligned to this obligation,” said Pamela Yoyo, TNPA Port Manager for Nelson Mandela Bay Ports.
