Tippers Creek and Redhouse Residents Could be in for a Wet Night

9 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Residents staying on the banks of the Swartkops River in the Redhouse area are already beginning to park on the land side of the railway line as the approach over the railway line is rapidly filling with water.

Low tide is at 3:18 pm and high tide at 9:58 pm. The incoming tide, water overflowing the Groendal dam (estimated at over 300 000 litres per second) and seepage into the Swartkops River Valley is expected to result in an anxious night for all residents along the banks of the Swartkops River.

When MyPE was at the Redhouse Yacht Club at 12:00 pm earlier today the water was already just below the last step to the entrance porch of the club and the water current speed on the far bank was visibly increasing. Many yachtsmen had just made it to the club in time to remove their boats from boat sheds that were already letting river water in.

Driving away I noticed that some of the residents had already opened their garage and other doors in mute acceptance that water would soon be streaming through their properties.

Water levels of the Swartkops River are expected to rise even further during the course of tonight.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. On the one hand I am extremely grateful that we didn’t buy property along the Swartkops river. On the other hand, I feel so desperately sorry for those less fortunate than us, who live in shacks or have tried their best to keep their properties maintained and now are engulfed by water, just not fair! – There but for the grace of God go I.
