Local jazz band, Afromix will be hosting a series of jazz performances and workshops in New Brighton, entitled Afro Jazz Concerts, aimed at “reviving the passion and entertainment of local music, while helping to identify and develop upcoming talent.”
The project will see a series of performances and workshops being held at New Brighton’s Red Location Museum on one Sunday afternoon of every month for the foreseeable future. Each performance will feature a local band performing together with Afromix.
Director and conductor of Afromix, Musa Mavundla, says the project was inspired by the numerous performance opportunities available for local musicians during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. “We are trying to sustain the culture of having local artists performing regularly as was the case during the soccer world Cup.”
According to Mavundla, the Afro Jazz Concerts project will help to uplift socio-economic development by attracting tourists and affording local artists an opportunity to showcase their talents. The workshops on musical techniques and stage presentation will help to improve the quality of local performances and will also identify new talent.
“It is important for us to help give our local musicians a platform to showcase their skills. This will also benefit the Metro as a viable destination for tourism and entertainment,” says Mavundla.
The first workshop and performance was held on May 01, 2011 and featured local vocal group, Intsholo, who have performed throughout South Africa as well as overseas in Brazil, Singapore and the UK.
Intsholo performed together with Afromix, the hosts of the Afro Jazz Concerts who made a name for themselves when they were selected to support the internationally renowned Andy Narell from the USA in his 2007 Nelson Mandela Bay performance. Afromix has also shared the stage with Mccoy Mrubata, Gloria Bosman, Paul Humner and Don Laka.
The Afro Jazz Concert performances and workshops will be held at New Brighton’s Red Location Museum on one Sunday of every month for the foreseeable future from 15h00. However, due to popular demand, a SPECIAL performance will be held on Sunday, May 22 featuring Afromix plus Bongani Tulwana and Intsholo. An entry fee of R50 will be charged at the door.
