If I had One Rand for every time I read this following message I may just have enough to buy a fairly decent EV:
“I hereby state i do not give my permission for facebook to use any of my information or posts!! I do not give permission!!!!”
We have all seen variations of the above message being posted by many of our online ‘friends’. Allow me to burst your bubble.
Saying the above is akin to going to the casino and writing the same message on every Rand you gamble with – after all the money is yours to begin with and you are only using it to try and gain some more. Or are you? Every piece of content you post on FB is done by you so that people can like your posts and more can follow you – don’t play the game AND balk at the rules. NOTHING posted on FB is such high quality content that it needs to be protected!
Why does Facebook exist?
- Facebook only exists as a skeleton, a cupboard for you to hang your content in/on.
- FB takes your content that you upload and repurposes it in such a way that your friends hang around much longer so that FB can earn advertising dollars.
- Similar to when you take money into the casino to gamble with – YOU are the product on FB and you ‘donate’ your own content to the platform.
- There is no such thing as a free lunch – YOU are the lunch for Mark and friends. Didn’t Mark start FB after the ‘illegally’ hacking into his alma mater’s database to set up a web site to RATE women on campus? Watch the Social Network movie.
- Content and media creators go through hoops to copyright their stuff – it is their living. So, if you want to deny FB from using your Intellectual Property then either don’t upload it, watermark the hell out of it or pay to have someone police use thereof.
Why your message is a waste of time:
- FB is BIGGER than you and you do not have a snowballs chance in hell to succeed in a legal action against them – learn from my mate Gerald Friedman who told me, when ABYC was in litigation with Transnet; “Alan, Transnet are bigger than you, they own the land and they have a great appettite to see the back of ABYC. I can stall them but eventually they will get you out if you don’t find a political solution!”
- FB can buy Transnet with petty cash – so don’t waste your time thinking that FB will actually feel threatened by your message!
According to The Motley Fool financial web site each user on Facebook is worth $43.31 (around R800.00) per annum to the company. An easy enough figure to calculate when you take the annual profit and divide it by the number of users.
Facebook reported a $39 billion net profit in 2023 (R728.47 Billion), an increase on the $23.1 billion it made in 2022.
Compare the above with Transnet’s Net LOSS for 2023 of R5.7 Billion (2022: R5 Billion profit).
