BEV SA (Beverages South Africa) members today hit back at the Sugar Tax proposed by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in his February 2016 budget speech.
Bottlers slammed the proposed tax for it’s targeting of the Sugar Sweetened Beverages market (SSB) saying that SSB accounts for only 3% of the daily kilojoules consumed by South Africans. Representatives from Coca Cola, Twizza and Refreshhh all slammed the proposed tax as discriminatory and opportunistic.
Beverages Africa Chairperson, Phil Gutsche, opinioned that the proposed tax was ‘murderous’ towards an industry that only formed a small part of the retail landscape utilising added sugar.
