The Milligan Taking Strain in the Rain

8 June 2011 By Alan Straton

The Continental Milligan Vintage Car Rally, which set out from George on Monday 6 June, has been adversely affected by the torrential rain that everyone in Port Elizabeth is celebrating, with today’s rallying being cancelled as a result of the inclement weather and many roads being closed off due to heavy rain.

The plan is to motor down to Herbertsdale to-morrow (Thursday 9 June), but Herbertsdale is presently cut off as the Gourits River has come down in all it’s wonderful water saturated glory.

The Results for Day 2:

  1. Dave Alexander and Diane Dugmore (both well known in historical racing circles) in a 1932 Lagonda with 24 points.
  2. Noel and Nelia Holmes in a 1970 Mercedes Benz with 49 points.
  3. Richard and Nicole Van Zummeren in a 1948 MG with 62 points.

Lots of “excitement” and hasty checking of pacemaker batteries happened on Day 2 when Barney Marais and Pierre Woeke in the 1916 Chevrolet (the oldest car) could have been second if they didn’t have a flat tyre which led to a 600 penalty points for being too late at a marshals point. They ended the day on 644 points.

Barend van den Broek and Esra Martins’ 1959 MG broke down on day 1 and couldn’t be repaired. They did however manage to hire a car to carry on competing in the event but this vehicle had an electrical short just after leaving the tea stop yesterday and almost caught alight. They did manage to get everything under control and complete the day. The fault was repaired and they were ready for day 3.

Overall Results After Day 2:

  1. Dave Alexander and Di Dugmore in the 1932 Lagonda.
  2. Colin and Susan Dettman in their 1939 Chevrolet.
  3. Neville and Susan Koch in a 1960 Riley.

With more rain overnight it looks as though the planned trip to Herbertsdale will not happen, though.

I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
