24 June 2015 By Alan Straton

Barney Marais

A Middelburg farmer and his original 1928 Chevrolet recently hit the road in spectacular fashion to participate in the 46th annual Milligan Vintage Trial held in June. Barney Marais in his red Chevrolet raced against 21 other participants to locations around the Eastern Cape, spanning more than 500 kilometers over four days. Marais, a former General Motors (GM) dealer from Joubertina in the Eastern Cape, first laid eyes on the vintage Chevrolet five years ago at a GM dealership in Randburg … [Read more...] about Driver puts 87 year old vehicle to the test

Nevertheless, with clear skies and an entertaining 160 km route for the final leg, the competitors aimed for ultimate timing … [Read more...] about East London couple win 2012 Continental Milligan Vintage Trial

Rain and Inquisitive Traffic Officials Hold Drivers Up

14 June 2012 By Alan Straton

Miligan East London

Organisers of the Milligan decided that the results from day three of the 2012 Continental Milligan vintage Trial would not count as a result of the heavy rains and numerous other delays experienced on the route. Despite an entertaining 120 km drive lined up for the day, the region was lashed with heavy rain overnight, which continued intermittently throughout the morning's stage, thus making the drive to East London particularly treacherous. The situation was further exacerbated by … [Read more...] about Rain and Inquisitive Traffic Officials Hold Drivers Up

Port Elizabeth Pair Score Major Triumph in their Minor

13 June 2012 By Alan Straton

Rodney and Ruth Idris in a 1951 Morris Minor

A mere six points separate the top two competitors at the end of the second day on the 2012 Continental Milligan Vintage Trial. The sealed odometer classic rally set off from the Fish River Sun at 08:30 on 12 June, taking the teams along the outskirts of Port Alfred, through Bathurst and on to Grahamstown on the undulating, bumpy and characteristically scenic R67. Following the tea stop at the Grahamstown Golf Club, the route briefly joined the N2 towards Port Elizabeth before deviating … [Read more...] about Port Elizabeth Pair Score Major Triumph in their Minor

The first car set off from the Fish River Sun at 09:00, and the convoy travelled through Port Alfred, Kenton-on-Sea and Alexandria on the R72. The Milligan Taking Strain in the Rain

8 June 2011 By Alan Straton

The Continental Milligan Vintage Car Rally, which set out from George on Monday 6 June, has been adversely affected by the torrential rain that everyone in Port Elizabeth is celebrating, with today's rallying being cancelled as a result of the inclement weather and many roads being closed off due to heavy rain. The plan is to motor down to Herbertsdale to-morrow (Thursday 9 June), but Herbertsdale is presently cut off as the Gourits River has come down in all it's wonderful water saturated … [Read more...] about The Milligan Taking Strain in the Rain

Those Old Codgers and Their Vintage Cars Make me Smile

3 June 2011 By Alan Straton

The highlight of the year in the life of the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club (EPVCC) is the annual Milligan Vintage Trial - sponsored once again this year by Continental and running from 5 to 9 June from George. I am led to believe that owning a vintage car results in the owner having heaps of time on his hands - a bit like sailors who spend 80% of their time on maintenance (more like pottering about and shining bits and bobs) and 20% of their time sailing. That time spent shining vehicles … [Read more...] about Those Old Codgers and Their Vintage Cars Make me Smile
