The 42nd Continental Milligan Vintage Trial will take to the roads on Monday 6 June, after registration and a line-up of the vintage cars the day before. This year, the time trail will start at the Protea King Georges Hotel in George, and the spider route will follow the picturesque roads of the Garden Route, ending each day back in George. Members of the public who want to see the cars and chat to the participants can go to the hotel on Sunday 5 June between 9am and 1.30 pm, where the cars will be on display.
“One of the interesting cars participating this year is the 1932 Lagonda Continental, driven by Dave Alexander and navigated by Diane Dugmore, who are Milligan regulars. We appeal to car and history lovers to come and support the intrepid participants, and celebrate the man-made beauty of the cars against the backdrop of some of the best scenery in the world,” notes Rene Olivier, spokesperson for Continental Tyre South Africa.
Vehicles in the Rally are categorised into groups. The Ancestor group applies to cars built prior to December 31, 1904. The Veteran group comprises cars manufactured between January 1905 and December 31, 1918. (Generally the above two classes are rallied together under the banner of Veteran). Vintage cars apply to vehicles built between January 1919 and December 31, 1930; and Post Vintage describes cars built between January 1931 and December 31, 1945. The Post War cars are those built between January 1946 and December 31, 1960. Finally, the Post group comprises vehicles manufactured between January 1961 and December 31, 1970.
This year, 40 cars have confirmed their presence on the Rally, and so 84 competitors and eight extra passengers will take part in the rally. Twelve officials will oversee the event. The event will end on Thursday 9 June, in George.
“We would like to thank Continental Tyre once again for their sponsorship, without which the rally would not take place,” adds event organiser Jeff Nel.
Tea Stops will be made in the following Towns where the vehicles can also be viewed:
- 06 June 2011 – Albertinia
- 07 June 011 – Eight Bells
- 08 June 2011 – Uniondale
- 09 June 2011 – Herbertsdale
The oldest vehicle and overall Runners-Up of the 2010 Continental Milligan will be a 1916 Chevrolet 490 Tourer with Barney Marais (driver) and Pierre Woeke (navigator). Some of the other rare vehicles will be a 1928 Sunbeam Saloon, 1931 De Soto SA Roadster, 1931 Chevolet Roadster, 1932 Lagonda Continental, 1938 Ford Deluxe, 1939 Chevrolet Opera Coupe (Nickname – Bessie), 1957 Gogga Mobil 400 Coupe, 1959 Gogga Mobil T7 Royal, and many more.
Lagonda is a British luxury car marque, founded as a company in 1906 in Staines, Middlesex by a former opera singer from Ohio, but of Scottish ancestry, named Wilbur Gunn (1859–1920). He named the company after a river near the town of his birth, Springfield, Ohio, United States. The marque has been owned by Aston Martin since 1947.
