Okay Mom, now that we have got rid of the riff raff let me tell you all about just how much people love me and the work that MyPE tirelessly does for Port Elizabeth…….
The e-mail that landed on my desktop in November 2010 read; “Dear Alan, Thank you for the great exposure that you have unstintingly given Continental Tyres over the last year. As a small token of appreciation we would like to offer you four new tyres.” Did you actually think that I would say no?
Chuckling quietly and evilly to myself I immediately shot off my Verne Troyer Goldmember acceptance note to Rene. “One Meeelion Dollars!”
But, I need not have played the part of Verne as Rene didn’t even blink when I informed her that my vehicle (the Meat Wagon) was shod with Continental 245×75 R15 C 4×4 tyres whose retail price ranges from R1 300 up. How frigging awesome was that?
The Meat Wagon’s four new tyres arrived in January and were promptly placed in the garage to await a suitable occasion to be slapped on.
Last week we went to ‘My Plett House‘ for a long weekend and the old tyres were deemed a little too smooth for N2 consumption so I phoned around for prices to fit my four new ‘babies’ that had been sitting in the garage just waiting for the momentous ‘Continental Fitment Day’.
Can you believe that I was quoted prices ranging from R114.00 to R40.00 per tyre for fitment and balancing?
Great was my happiness to find that the two lowest prices quoted were from the two sole Conti Partners in town. Oliver Tyre Group in Commercial Road, Sidwell quoted me R40.00 per tyre and I was down there like a shot. Wouter Meiring explained the reason why Oliver was so competitive simply as follows; “We have been in these same premises for years and do not have expensive and uneccesary frills and fancies.”
When I had finished boasting to Wouter of just how much Continental Tyre South Africa loved me by supplying me wiff four brand new tyres for free, he graciously offered to fit my tyres for free as well. Cripes, the wheel does turn and good Karma does pay off in the end.
After all my 2Oceansvibe mate in Cape Town gets all manner of ‘endorsements’ from savvy marketers in the Western Cape so why can’t ‘lil old MyPE also benefit from some timely largess?
And by the way Rene, I have faithfully recorded the mileage on the Meat Wagon (171 360) and eagerly await to see if I will once again get 70 000 fantastic kilometres on my new Continentals, as I did on the first set. If I do, I may just allow you to throw another set of new CTSA tyres at me to fit the Gas Guzzler (the silver 450 SLC classic parked in the garage!)
Give Wouter a ring at the Oliver Tyre Group next time you are looking for Continentals for your ride.
