Hope was restored to the people of 7de Laan in Helenvale when Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan led a delegation of municipal and government officials on a service delivery meeting and site visit yesterday, 10 May 2016.
The site visit was meant to address service delivery challenges that are faced by the people of 7de Laan. 7de Laan is one of the areas that are affected by high crime rate, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, gangsterism, unemployment and failure by parents to register their newly born children with home affairs.
When the Executive Mayor heard the plight of the people of 7de Laan, through a Rapid Response Task Team that is within his office almost a month ago, he decided to coordinate municipal and government departments for short, medium and long term service delivery interventions in the area.
The was meant to check work that has been done, current state of affairs and long term solutions that can be implemented. He also visited the area to interact with the community members to brief them about the plans of the municipality in the areas of crime fighting, job creation and economic development.
Present at the site visit accompanying the Executive Mayor were municipal and government officials from, Infrastructure & Engineering, Budget & Treasury Customer Care, Electricity & Energy, Water & Sanitation, SASSA, the Department of Social Development and the Department of Home Affairs.
Addressing a fully packed church hall the Executive Mayor urged the community of Helenvale to take responsibility of their destiny. He called for the community of 7de Laan to work with government to take care of the facilities that government has provided.
He said: “I am coming to you today with a team of officials who are relevant to all the challenges faced here. I will be monitoring the officials closely to see if the commitments made here will be kept within the promised time. It can not be that the people of this area must not enjoy the service delivery that is enjoyed by other areas of the City. That has to stop”.
He further requested that the community leadership form a committee that would assist in tracking the progress made on service delivery concerns and to represent the community with ongoing challenges. The Mayor requested a list of youth seeking employment, in an effort to assist those with employment opportunities.
A brief presentation was given by each department official outlining their responsibilities and what they would do to improve the situation of 7de Laan. The community were also given an opportunity to engage with the Executive Mayor and share their concerns and daily challenges.
Many of them thanked the Executive Mayor for the opportunity to address their concerns and thanked the Municipality for the efforts made thus far in the area, such as: fixing of sewerage pipes, repair of street lights and the provision of temporary housing structures given to those who had lost their homes in a recent fires.
The session was concluded with a site visit by municipal and government officials, showing the Executive Mayor some of the work that has been done and other areas that need urgent attention. The Executive Mayor committed to ongoing engagements with the residents of 7de Laan and Helenvale.
