In the Haunted House on Bird Island

18 August 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Haunted House

Though now also fully automated, Bird Island was once one of the most remote lighthouses along the coast. Keepers used carrier pigeons to send urgent messages to the mainland, if medical attention or supplies were needed. Still today, maintenance staff members refuse to sleep over on Bird Island when working there. They say a ghost pulls off their blankets as they sleep, and chilly draughts blow through the room, even though the windows are all closed. They believe it’s the ghost of Mrs … [Read more...] about In the Haunted House on Bird Island

The Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) based Due North Rum Club held their annual Black Tot ceremony at the Prince Alfred's Guards drill hall on 2 August 2014. This ceremony is held annually to commemorate the demise of the naval rum ration on 31 July 1970. In true naval fashion the colours of the Due North Rum Club are raised and lowered to half mast by Brett Momberg (notice the Pongo like fastening of the Halyard!) and piped by John Scott. We then sat down to a "Christmas Lunch" and five … [Read more...] about Sweethearts and Wives, May they never meet

Penguin Protection

Rangers and Scientists on the island say that the African Penguin can do an unwary leg a bit of damage - needless to say I didn't place myself in a situation that would have resulted in angry mom succeeding with her strike. MyPE spent two days on Bird Island courtesy of Sanparks. http://youtu.be/M66rHZ1Z2t4 Creator: mypedotcoza Posted to MyPE by: Alan Straton Submit your favourite Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch videos for consideration for publication on MyPE by filling in … [Read more...] about Penguin Protection Bird Island Style

Gannet Scientist

On a recent trip to Bird Island we saw this scientist reach out and select a Gannet for study. The contents of the recently returned from fishing gannets stomach are retrieved for analysis leaving a somewhat hungry bird. We stayed on Bird Island courtesy of Sanparks who administer the Greater Addo Marine Protected Area. Listen carefully in the video to hear the moans of protest by the Gannets - quite comical. http://youtu.be/HeinrJi70wo Scientists estimate that there are over 98 700 … [Read more...] about Give it up Mr Gannet!

Eric Pow Chong

This past Sunday on the deck at ABYC was especially special as well known Port Elizabeth based singer, Charmaine Allison and friends joined Eric in an impromptu concert on the deck, singing a couple of numbers. Charmaine is mother to Idols Finalist Melissa Allison. Charmaine performed Simply the Best by Tina Turner and was certainly prepared for the job in her skin tight leather pants and attitude to match. This year the train beat the runners by 30 seconds in 1 hour 56 minutes. The return journey took 45 minutes - must have been because it was downhill! Bird Island Garage

Bird Island Garage

When it comes to government departments it seems as though the mistakes of today are just repetitions of the past. The Bird Island Keepers abandoned home was built with a garage - just how a motor vehicle would be allowed or transported to the island remains a mystery though. The 19 Hectare Bird Island in Algoa Bay, close to Port Elizabeth is home to over 300 000 birds. Bird Island and St. Croix Island in Algoa Bay were proclaimed as part of Addo Elephant National Park in 2005. A Marine … [Read more...] about Bird Island Garage

Graham Jones – Sculptor

14 July 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Amy Bode writes; "Last year I was given a film project whilst still studying at NMMU. The project's brief was to film a 2-minute profile on a reputable artist and conduct an interview with the artist. I chose the extremely talented Graham Jones, a sculptor based in Port Elizabeth. This was my first ever attempt at using my camera to video and so the sound might be a little rough. I surprisingly had fun with this project and now appreciate documentaries and short films a lot more!" All filming … [Read more...] about Graham Jones – Sculptor
