The inaugural Man vs Machine Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race (modelled on the former Great Train Race) between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage took place on 27 July 2014.
This year the train beat the runners by 30 seconds in 1 hour 56 minutes.
The return journey took 45 minutes – must have been because it was downhill! But you can experience the trip in just over 3 minutes as we leave the Uitenhage Station and pause at De Mist, Despatch, Perserverance, Swartkops, New Brighton, Sydenham and North End train stations before reaching the Port Elizabeth station.
This time lapse was made by securing a GoPro to the front of the diesel locomotive for the trip back to Port Elizabeth from Uitenhage – heart stopping moments for me as I spent the journey contemplating my camera falling off and disappearing ……….
