Red tide hits coast
An outbreak of harmful algal bloom, also known as a red tide, has been confirmed along some parts of the Garden Route coast. (Editor: The last Red Tide to hit Algoa Bay followed on from the first Algal Blooms being reported south of us. On 12 December Dr Tommy Bornham confirmed the possibility of blooms in Algoa Bay - see: High Risk of Harmful Algal Blooms). People should not fish, bathe or swim in affected areas such as Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and Wilderness, warned environmental affairs … [Read more...] about Red tide hits coast
High Risk of Harmful Algal Blooms (Red Tide) this holiday
Dr Tommy Bornman of the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) said today; "The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) and the Institute for Coastal and Marine Research, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) sampled several red tide blooms in Algoa Bay and St Francis Bay on 10 December 2015 and confirm that the Harmful Algal Bloom forming dinoflagellate, Lingulodinium polyedrum, has made a return to our shores. Sea conditions are currently optimal for … [Read more...] about High Risk of Harmful Algal Blooms (Red Tide) this holiday
Red Tide – #JustSaying
On 11 November 2014 at the African Maritime Domain Conference Tommy Bornham from SAEON predicted the recurrence of Red Tide in Algoa Bay. The words are not stale yet and ........... See: Red Tide Expected to re-occur http://youtu.be/TJoYHn4d9iY … [Read more...] about Red Tide – #JustSaying
Red Tide expected to re-occur
Speaking at #AMD2014 (the African Maritime Domain Conference) today, Tommy Bornham from SAEON (the South African Environmental Observation Network) said that the recent red tide we experienced in Algoa Bay earlier this year will more than likely return this summer season. The organism responsible for the red tide was one Lingulodinium polyedrum: As part of its life cycle, this species produces a resting stage, a dinoflagellate cyst called Lingulodinium machaerophorum. This cyst was first … [Read more...] about Red Tide expected to re-occur
Experience the Red Tide underwater
On Monday 10 February 2014 Rainer Schimpf from Expert Tours and I launched off of Noorhoek to test out his GoPro Dolphin Cam. Yes we saw dolphins but they were 'confined' to a narrow stretch of water close to the shoreline that was free of the Red Tide that has plagued Algoa Bay and coast for the past month or so. After testing V1 of the Dolphin Cam and not getting any decent footage we the ventured further offshore and out into the red tide off of Noordhoek. The water loses it's … [Read more...] about Experience the Red Tide underwater
Expert says that Red tide is no threat to River Mile
With the red tide bloom having decayed in most parts of Algoa Bay, swimmers in this weekend's SPAR River Mile Festival will have no reason to fear any lingering effects on the Sundays River. According to estuarine ecology expert Professor Janine Adams of NMMU, the large-scale bloom of Lingulodinium polyedrum had been present in both the Sundays River estuary mouth and the Swartkops River, which is traditionally the home of the race. In the Sundays River, Adams said the red tide had been … [Read more...] about Expert says that Red tide is no threat to River Mile
What caused the recent Red Tide in Algoa Bay?
Dear Alan This is what I was thinking about the red tide at 04h00 this morning..... Maybe it is due to the seismic survey ship - which has chased the whales away. The red tide is caused by phytoplanktons which feed on nutrient rich water. The whales would have eaten the nutrients but because they were chased away the phytoplanktons moved in. OR the seismic survey released the blooms of the phytoplanktons which then just carried on multiplying. I am sure there is some link between … [Read more...] about What caused the recent Red Tide in Algoa Bay?
Possible Red Tide Warning
Following the recent discolouration (red sea water) of sea water in some areas of the Nelson Mandela Bay coastal area and the subsequent tests and consultations that we have made with experts on this field, we would like to send a warning to the members of the public to be cautious. We would like to advise them not to consume shellfish from our costal area until such time we are convinced that it is safe to do so. The municipality with its stakeholders who are specialists in this field are … [Read more...] about Possible Red Tide Warning
