Who will take ownership of the Baratz Wreck when it becomes a major disaster?

Baratz Diesel Fuel Leak Ropes

Dear MyPE Like a story from a novel one reads on social media, various online papers, in the news, on TV and on 50/50, the story of the Baratz as it gathers momentum and goes viral. What is it that makes this wreck so different to other fishing vessels sunk in all the years off Algoa Bay? Apparently 400 wrecks lie within and on the boundary of Algoa Bay so why is there such a hype about this one? Maybe the rescue of all crew after a mysterious accident by the brave Air Force and NSRI, … [Read more...] about Who will take ownership of the Baratz Wreck when it becomes a major disaster?

Baratz Wreck – now an Environmental Disaster for Algoa Bay

7 January 2016 By Alan Straton

Baratz Stern

Reports flowing in now indicate that tons of diesel on-board the sunken crayfishing boat, the Baratz, is now escaping into the sea at a far greater rate than ever before. Yesterday at around 10:00 am the wreck area was approached by a dive tour boat from Expert Tours and owner Rainer Schimpf remarked to MyPE later that day that; "... the smell of diesel and extent of it on the surface was far greater than on previous encounters and more than one nautical mile from the wreck." At 14h00, … [Read more...] about Baratz Wreck – now an Environmental Disaster for Algoa Bay

Killer Whales Supporting the Handicapped

Orca Hunting Brydes Whale

On Saturday 27 April 2013 in the Aghullas current off of Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, Expert Tours guide, Rainer Schimpf and a German Film Crew witnessed two firsts as a pod of 7 Killer Whales (Orcas) hunted a Brydes Whale and then demonstrated that their complex social structures also seem to extend to caring for the handicapped. In waves of 3.5 metre in height and in pursuit of a bait-ball sighting Schimpf observed large splashes ahead of his boat which were quickly established as Orca's … [Read more...] about Killer Whales Supporting the Handicapped

The Least We Could do was Release them off of St Croix

23 August 2011 By Alan Straton

Port Elizabeth's local marine rehabilitation centre, SAMREC, is continuing with a great job of rehabilitating marine animals and releasing them back into Algoa Bay. Of course they do get return customers who like the Cape Receife centre so much that they return again and again for some free fish and a haircut! The latest batch of 9 Bird Island penguins were quite stoked to catch a lift with Expert Tours all the way out to St Croix, this past weekend, before being released - cutting their … [Read more...] about The Least We Could do was Release them off of St Croix

Did Woolworths ‘Poach’ Poaching Video?

19 August 2011 By Alan Straton

The delicate balancing act between showcasing the horrors of Rhino poaching and the need to 'shock' people into sitting up and take notice of the plight of Rhino's in South Africa often leads people to trample over the rights of others in a misguided attempt to profit off of the situation. Often legitimate owners of copyrighted material are 'coerced' into 'donating' video and images that they do not want to make public owing to the shocking horror of said images or video. Trampling on the … [Read more...] about Did Woolworths ‘Poach’ Poaching Video?
