3 August 2011 By Alan Straton

With reference to this letter to the editor, Have Harbour, Will Pollute, local clean up outfit Xtreme Projects have submitted two images of a recent mock clean up exercise that hey held as well as answering some of the concerns raised by Ocean Messengers. As Kevin said in the comments to the above letter to the editor; Xtreme Projects are on duty at the rig 24 hours a day, the containment booms at the rig are monitored 24 hours as the wind and the flowing Coega river with wood, sewage etc … [Read more...] about Have Harbour, Will Pollute Version 2

Have Harbour, Will Pollute

2 August 2011 By Port Elizabethan

On a flight towards Woody Cape yesterday, I flew over the Coega Harbour and saw the oil platform that is moored there being rinsed and washed. I wonder if they have a SAMSA permit and if it is under the same conditions as the previous Oil Rig that was 'cleaned' recently? The series of four images clearly show: Large amounts of water exiting the oil rig's structural columns connecting the pontoons and operating deck. An 'ominous' and unhealthy looking 'shadow' following the dredger out … [Read more...] about Have Harbour, Will Pollute

Will Coega Become a Haven for the Dirty Oil Rig Cleaning Industry?

19 July 2011 By Alan Straton

The entry of any oil rig into Algoa Bay raises many environmental questions as oil is harmful to the marine environment. The movement of the … [Read more...] about Will Coega Become a Haven for the Dirty Oil Rig Cleaning Industry?

I Don’t Know About You but Images Like This Make me Nervous

5 May 2011 By Alan Straton

So there we were with a wonderful new big harbour just down the drag from the Port of Port Elizabeth. Everyone had a fine time doing the Environmental Impact Assessments and then swung into action to keep an unsuspecting populace in check and ignorant of abuse of the very laws that were championed in order to establish the Nqura Harbour in the first place. A few years down the line the EIA's had been buried in paper and the watchers have become complacent - fat with the free lunches, drowning … [Read more...] about I Don’t Know About You but Images Like This Make me Nervous

Coega Oil Rig Repairs a Major Cause for Concern

15 March 2011 By Alan Straton

The Coega Environmental Monitoring Committee (EMC) meets every month in order to report back on outstanding and upcoming issues within the Coega IDZ and the Port of Nqura. At the 23 February meeting, Dr Paul Martin, the Coega/Ngqura Environmental Control Officer (ECO) highlighted a potential conflict with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that was originally issued for the Port of Nqura saying; "The ECO has previously raised concerns that the Port is being used for the repair of … [Read more...] about Coega Oil Rig Repairs a Major Cause for Concern
