Have Harbour, Will Pollute Version 2

3 August 2011 By Alan Straton

With reference to this letter to the editor, Have Harbour, Will Pollute, local clean up outfit Xtreme Projects have submitted two images of a recent mock clean up exercise that hey held as well as answering some of the concerns raised by Ocean Messengers.

As Kevin said in the comments to the above letter to the editor;

Xtreme Projects are on duty at the rig 24 hours a day, the containment booms at the rig are monitored 24 hours as the wind and the flowing Coega river with wood, sewage etc entering the port, we damaged one of our FRC’s when we struck a large fence pole that floated into the harbour. Xtreme Projects is contracted to be on standby in case, the water that is dirty is from the river, Xtreme Projects will be there until the rig leaves, as we are ISO14001 certified and will report any pollution should it happen. Check the website on the rig and it gives you the full picture of how a GREEN RIG works.

The other photo’s in this piece are of the dredger, dredging the harbour where they are extending the quay wall, it will be muddy in the area they work as it is MUD they are removing.

    The mock spill exercise is something we do with the ports to ensure that we are ready and up to speed SHOULD something happen in our waters, the ship traffic around Southern Africa has increased 10 fold, this way we know our equipment is working land and sea.

    The recent “Oil Spill Prevention Workshop” held over 3 days was conducted by Mr John Owens, US Navy on-Scene coordinator where many role players took part, we did the mock spill at Coega.
