The Dark Side smash 24 Hour Sailing Challenge Record

In 2016 the 24 Hour Sailing Challenge record on the North End Lake was set by Team Sonnet from the Algoa Bay Yacht Club who completed 60 nautical miles in the 24 hour period. The winning team from the Redhouse Yacht Club, 'The Dark Side' won this year's event and smashed the record by sailing 101.5 nautical miles in 24 hours. Concerns over Water Quality Scupper National Event

Open water swimming in Nelson Mandela Bay suffered a huge setback this week with the announcement that the 2017 South African Open Water Swimming Nationals awarded to Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics for North End Lake on the 4th and 5th March has been relocated to Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay. The organic clean-up of the largest freshwater lake in the Nelson Mandela Bay region is yielding positive results, with the water body set to be "swimmer-ready" during the course of this year, results show. Port Elizabeth's North End Lake has experienced a bit of a revival from the sailing community. The first Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) interclub sailing regatta, in the shadow of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium took place in 2014. 2015 has seen the second interclub on the Lake and the inaugural Redhouse Yacht Club (RYC) 24-Hour Sailing Challenge which took place on the weekend of 31 October 2015. Cleaning of North End Lake enters Bioremediation phase

The construction phase of the re-mediation of the North End Lake is fully operational with the construction of four stormwater gabion filter ponds at four points around the lake. The multi-million rand project is planned for completion before December. Four SMMEs have been appointed for the work, creating approximately 35 job opportunities. Capitalising on the World First Sailing Event in 2014 when the Algoa Bay Yacht Club hosted an Inter Club Sailing Event, the Redhouse Yacht Club now invites all dinghy sailors to an exciting new fun endurance team sailing event to be held over 24 hrs at the North End Lake. The recent World First Interclub Dinghy Sailing Regatta which took place from 26 to 28 April 2014 and contested on Port Elizabeth's North End Lake was won by the Algoa Bay Yacht Club. Of the 38 competitors that sailed in the three day regatta ABYC fielded 26 sailors, Redhouse Yacht Club 9 and Rhodes Sailing Club 3. Almost like a visit from James Bond - watch as this rider rises out of the 'mist' from the waters of the North End Lake on his flyboard. The Flyboard was invented in spring 2011 by a French watercraft rider, Franky Zapata.
