World Spay Day

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League of Port Elizabeth are embarking on a Joint Venture with Animal Outreaches to tackle the Mission Road township for World Spay Day on 26 February. However, these two organisations are expanding the day into a a week of spaying. There are an estimated 500 dogs in need of sterilisation in the Missionvale area. Animal Outreaches are currently busy with dipping, inoculating and de-worming in the area, prior to the spayathon. Animal Anti-Cruelty are challenging … [Read more...] about World Spay Day – Making a difference

Rain puts damper on Toy Run target

21 February 2012 By Alan Straton

2011 Toy Run Beneficiaries

On 15 February 2012, at a function held at the Midnight Motorcycle Club, R156 000.00 was handed over to charities as part of the Port Elizabeth leg of the annual Toy Run, a non-profit charity event. Although the organizer's aim was to generate R200 000 for charities in its twentieth year of the event, the torrential rain on the day of the Toy Run had an adverse impact on potential fund raising. Annual fund raising through the Toy Run focuses on supporting children through pre-identified, … [Read more...] about Rain puts damper on Toy Run target

MyPE and Lynne Lund Contribute $850 to Missionvale

21 September 2011 By Alan Straton

A series of articles on copyright published on MyPE dovetailed with the granting of a request by Australian Artist Lynne Lund for permission to use a MyPE image of the Missionvale Tree in a derivative work to be sold by the Australian Missionvale chapter to raise funds for the Missionvale Care Centre in Port Elizabeth. Pat, the event organiser then commissioned Lynne (lynnelund.com) to paint another painting featuring the tree. Once again Lynne asked if I would give permission for her to use … [Read more...] about MyPE and Lynne Lund Contribute $850 to Missionvale

Temporary Housing for Missionvale Residents

13 September 2011 By NMB Communications

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality came to the rescue of two desperate residents of Missionvale whose shacks burnt down by providing temporary housing structures as emergency relief. Noxolo Kortjan-Xakaxa and Siphokazi Nonyongo were in dire straights when their shacks burnt down last week, and approached the NMBM's Integrated Human Settlements Directorate for assistance. They were left homeless after their shacks burnt to the ground. Both residents hailed the response by the Municipality as … [Read more...] about Temporary Housing for Missionvale Residents

That Missionvale Tree

1 September 2011 By Alan Straton

This Saturday, 3 September 2011, the Australian supporters of the Port Elizabeth based Missionvale Care Centre are holding a concert and silent auction to raise funds to help Sister Ethel and her Missionvale community. Australian artist, Lynne Lund, asked for permission to use a MyPE image for a derivative work of the original Missionvale tree that 'spoke' to Sister Ethel - giving the impetus for the establishment of Missionvale Care Centre. Lynne's aim was to use her work at the upcoming … [Read more...] about That Missionvale Tree

Dear Weekend Post – THIS is How you Comport Yourself on the Internet

8 August 2011 By Alan Straton

A week or two ago I had a concern with the Weekend Post 'stealing' one of the images on MyPE and in a fit of pique posted this article: Weekend Post Taking MyPE for a Ride. Our esteemed weekly newspaper then offered me their standard fee for a contributor (at R150.00 I didn't deem it enough for me to retire on, I might add!), and then hinted broadly that I might consider removing the article. I may be a web site hooker but, sorry for you WP, R150.00 is a bit low for such an act of … [Read more...] about Dear Weekend Post – THIS is How you Comport Yourself on the Internet

Relief for 93-year old Nompunzi Ngubenkosi

21 July 2011 By NMB Communications

It was a day to remember for a 93 year old blind woman from Missionvale who today was relieved from her misery of living in a water logged shack when she received a safer temporary housing structure from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Nompunzi Ngubenkosi was at a loss for words when the Municipality handed over a brand new temporary housing structure to her on Wednesday, 20 July at her home in Missionvale. Ngubenkosi has had to live in appalling conditions after her shack was filled … [Read more...] about Relief for 93-year old Nompunzi Ngubenkosi

67 Minutes for Mandela

27 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Nelson Rolihlala Mandela

Mandela Day is a call to action for people everywhere to take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time, just as Nelson Mandela did. Nelson Mandela spent more than 67 years serving his community, his country, and the world at large. On Mandela Day people are called to devote just 67 minutes of their time to changing the world for the better, in a small gesture of solidarity with humanity, and in a small step towards a continuous, global movement for … [Read more...] about 67 Minutes for Mandela

Missonvale Disaster Report Back

9 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Dear All Thank you for your outstanding response so far. It has been wonderful. The long and the short of it is that it is very volatile out there at the moment. The residents are angry and demanding action, which is not happening. We feel it is too dangerous to take volunteers in there en masse today, as there will be a stampede. Our fieldworkers have loaded up every blanket and bit of food that we have and are back there right now, helping out a 78-year old lady whose home is completely … [Read more...] about Missonvale Disaster Report Back

Missionvale Flooding

8 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Hi All Missionvale is already a disaster zone with the flooding. I have listed Animal Anti Cruelty for emergency call out with the disaster teams. If anyone can give me cellphone numbers for standby if you are prepared to be called out to help, please let me know. So many animals are chained and cannot escape flood waters. Have explained this to the police and disaster teams and asked them to watch out for this. Thanks all. Regards Linda-Louise Animal Anti-Cruelty … [Read more...] about Missionvale Flooding

Missionvale Sh*t Protest

7 May 2011 By Port Elizabethan

Dear Editor Yesterday morning (5 May 2011) I was teaching at Missionvale campus of NMMU, and drove through a pile of human shit on the road, after distressed residents of Missionvale had protested against the 'bucket system' by blocking the road and pouring out the contents of their buckets. You may remember that two years ago, there were similar protests by residents of Missionvale, blocking the Uitenhage road, although not with shit. What interests me is that although I heard a report of … [Read more...] about Missionvale Sh*t Protest

Jacob Makes SAPS Clean the Streets

8 April 2011 By Alan Straton

Jacob Zuma

Just received a phone call from one of the Bed and Breakfast owners on BnBPE.co.za who reports that one of her employees, Jeanette (surname withheld), is most 'impressed' with the visit by President Jacob Zuma to the Missionvale area of Port Elizabeth today. Apparently Jeanette hails from the area around the NMMU North Campus (old Vista University) and was having a quiet chuckle whilst informing her employer that swarms of Municipal workers and even SAPS members had been deployed to clean the … [Read more...] about Jacob Makes SAPS Clean the Streets

Giving Back to the Community

28 March 2011 By Alan Straton

Eveready South Africa (Pty) Ltd recently embarked on a campaign to give back to the needy charities of the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage areas. The "Eveready Cares" campaign formed part of the companies's social investment initiatives and acted as an employee engagement exercise. Each department at Eveready was asked to pick a charity which they wanted to support, after which Eveready contacted each of the organisations and identified what items were most needed for the charity in terms of … [Read more...] about Giving Back to the Community
