Marking of NSC supplementary scripts completed
The marking of the 2013 National Senior Certificate (NSC) Supplementary Examination scripts have been concluded, the Basic Education Department announced on Thursday. The department said learners will be able to collect their marks from 29 April 2014 to 6 May 2014. About 86 493 full time and 1 367 part time candidates sat for the 2013 supplementary examinations, which commenced on 17 February 2014 and concluded on 25 March 2014. Only 26% of 2001 EC school intake made it to matric this year
Less than a third of learners in the Eastern Cape who enrolled in school in twelve years ago will be writing their matric this year. According to the reply to a written question I asked the MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula, 74% of learners who entered the system in 2001, did not make it to matric in 2012. Of the 26% (or 72 354 children) who did make it all the way to matric last year, only 14% (or 39 443) of the total cohort actually passed matric. Eastern Cape still has worst matric pass rate
The Eastern Cape remains the worst performer with a matric pass rate of 61.6 % for 2012. The Democratic Alliance welcomes the 3.5 % improvement in the provincial 2012 matric pass rate of 61.6%. However the province has yet again failed – as in 2011 – to not be the worst performing province in the country. The national pass rate for the Class of 2012 is 73.9 %. Eastern Cape matric students have limited access to libraries
A DA survey of public library opening hours in the Eastern Cape has revealed a concerning lack of accessibility for learners during the matric exam period. Many libraries in the province do not open at all on certain days or have short operating hours. In Port Elizabeth and East London some libraries do not open at all on weekends, while some close their doors at 1pm on a Friday. Get Ready for Images of Little Ones Starting School
Schools in the coastal provinces will join the rest of the country on Wednesday when thousands of learners start the 2011 academic year. The Basic Education Department has urged learners who qualify for supplementary exams for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) to register on or before 24 January 2011.
