Commemorating World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

16 November 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape commemorates World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. Today, we remember those who were severely injured or killed in road traffic accidents in our province. The theme for this year is 'speed kills – design out speeding'. In 2013, it was documented by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) that one of the major contributing factors to fatal car crashes is speeding. Arrive Alive reported that human error … [Read more...] about Commemorating World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

Clear timeframes needed for new scholar transport system

6 October 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Clear timeframes must be spelled out by the Department of Transport for providing scholar transport in the Eastern Cape. We cannot allow another school year to be disrupted where learners are left in the lurch because of inadequate transport. It is high time that we put the learners first and the tenderpreneurs second. The education of our learners cannot be held hostage by vested interests. Details are unclear of the process of changing from the current contract with One … [Read more...] about Clear timeframes needed for new scholar transport system

Gangsterism is rife in PE northern areas

6 September 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE This is an extract of a speech delivered by Marshall von Buchenroder (MPL) on behalf of the National Council of Provinces in Parliament yesterday. Honourable Chairperson, on behalf of the Democratic Alliance I hereby wish to move a motion without notice, the Council should note that: Since the 1960's, Helenvale and Gelvandale have been renowned for their high levels of violent crimes and gangsterism due to the social ills of the community. These residents were forced by the … [Read more...] about Gangsterism is rife in PE northern areas

Cadre deployment of Mandela Metro Police Chief is illegal

5 February 2014 By Port Elizabethan

The DA believes that the recent appointment of Metro Police Chief, Pinky Mathabathe, by the Executive Mayor, Benson Fihla, is illegal and nothing more than another political appointee to our over politicized administration. The DA supports the formation of a Metro Police Unit that is constituted legally and which is budgeted for appropriately. In Nelson Mandela Bay no position exists on our organogram for a police chief nor is there a budget allocated to pay her salary. Only Council has the … [Read more...] about Cadre deployment of Mandela Metro Police Chief is illegal

Korsten Traffic Department in dire straits – Traffic Department Chief should act now

12 February 2013 By Port Elizabethan

The DA will propose in the Standing Committee meeting on Safety and Security that the Korsten Traffic Department should now close at 16h00 and not at 14h00, as is currently the situation. Last week, the Traffic Department was closed for two days and people stood in queues outside since the early hours of the morning, only to be told at 8 that the server was offline and there was no toner in the printer. People were forced to go home and suffer the consequences. In a council meeting last … [Read more...] about Korsten Traffic Department in dire straits – Traffic Department Chief should act now

11 February 2013 By Port Elizabethan

The DA will propose to the NMBM standing committee on Safety and Security that the Law Enforcement Officers that have been trained and are employed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality, be moved to work in the city. Their job description would include monitoring the streets around the city of PE 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and responding to criminal activities. The security officers would also work closely with SAPS in combating crime. Currently, the Law Enforcement Officers are … [Read more...] about Call for more Law Enforcement Officers in the city
