Commemorating World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

16 November 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Dear MyPE

Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape commemorates World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. Today, we remember those who were severely injured or killed in road traffic accidents in our province.

The theme for this year is ‘speed kills – design out speeding’. In 2013, it was documented by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) that one of the major contributing factors to fatal car crashes is speeding. Arrive Alive reported that human error accounts for 85% of road traffic accidents.

The DA mourns with those who have lost loved ones in fatal car accidents and we send our sincere condolences to the family of former Miss PE, Bianca-Anne Harper Agherdien, who was involved in a head-on collision on Tuesday.

The festive season is around the corner and the highest numbers of road traffic accident deaths occur during this period. We urge residents of the Eastern Cape to consider fellow road users and drive within the speed limits.

According to resolution 14 of the Department of Roads and Transport, an agreement was presented by the Chamber for ratification in 2009 which stated that a shift system for traffic officers would be implemented in the Eastern Cape. This would mean that there would be increased traffic police presence on our roads. This agreement needs to be monitored and implemented sufficiently.

I will be submitting questions to the MEC for Transport, Weziwe Tikana, to ascertain what steps have been taken to implement resolution 14 of 2009.

Regards
