Korsten Traffic Department in dire straits – Traffic Department Chief should act now

12 February 2013 By Port Elizabethan

The DA will propose in the Standing Committee meeting on Safety and Security that the Korsten Traffic Department should now close at 16h00 and not at 14h00, as is currently the situation.

Last week, the Traffic Department was closed for two days and people stood in queues outside since the early hours of the morning, only to be told at 8 that the server was offline and there was no toner in the printer. People were forced to go home and suffer the consequences.

In a council meeting last year September, a resolution was taken that the Korsten Traffic Department would close at 14h00 due to staff shortages.

The situation has however changed as the positions that were vacant have been filled, but the Traffic Department still closes at 14h00.

People should not need to take leave and spend the whole day in long queues at the Traffic Department before being serviced.

The Traffic Department Chief, Hamelton Toy-Toy should act speedily and make sure that sufficient staff is deployed to the Korsten Traffic Department.

Currently, if one staff member at the Traffic Department is sick or on leave, their chair stays empty with no-one to replace them and service delivery becomes hampered.

More positions need to be made vacant at the Traffic Department to improve service delivery.

If something is not done about the mismanagement and staff shortages at the Traffic Department, we will lose revenue to the Department of Roads and Transport, in the same way that licensing of motor vehicles has been taken over by the Post Office.

Cllr Marshall von Buchenroder
DA Spokesperson for Safety & Security
