The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has called on non-profit organisations, non-governmental organisations, public benefit trusts, schools and communities to apply for funding. In a statement issued on Tuesday, NLC commissioner Charlotte Mampane said Tuesday's call was the second of three done annually for the public to apply for funding. Eastern Cape gets 17% cut of National Lottery funds

Over R1,48-billion has been paid out to beneficiaries in the Eastern Cape since the National Lotteries Board (NLB) started distributing funds in 2002. In the 2013 financial year the province received R154 million in grants to a wide range of organisations, according to NLB spokesperson Sershan Naidoo. Speaking at a media briefing in the NLB's new offices in East London, Naidoo said the province had received on average nearly 18% of the R2 billion a year the board has to distribute.
