Organisers of The Herald VWSA Cycle Tour have made a minor adjustment to the 106km Classic route, following a request from the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, which runs the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. South Africa’s second oldest national classic, which takes place in Port Elizabeth on February 3, is an official premier seeding event of the Cycle Tour. As such, race director Tony Cooney said they would bypass the short but challenging 1km Slanghoogte climb to bring the course in line … [Read more...] about Cycle tour bids farewell to Slanghoogte

Kids Cycle Enduro

14 January 2013 By Alan Straton

Danny Williams

Due to demand from budding cyclists, The Herald VWSA Cycle Tour has introduced an "endurance" challenge for children called the Powerade 10km Sprint. Aimed at the 10 to 12 year age group, the latest addition to the Powerade-sponsored family road events effectively bridges the gap between the 21km Leisure Ride on the one side and the 2km Kiddies' Ride and 500m Toddlers' Dash on the other. According to event coordinator Linda Harwood, the new race fulfilled the organisers' vision to offer a … [Read more...] about Kids Cycle Enduro

6 December 2012 By Alan Straton

Organisers of the Eastern Cape's biggest mountain bike event, The Herald VW Cycle Tour, will finally get to roll out their much-anticipated trails at Addo on February 2 after torrential rains rendered the new course unrideable this year. "I'm pleased to say that the 2012 downpours haven't put a damper on the enthusiasm for next year's event," said race director Brad Jackson of Mountain Events. "We have gone to great lengths to rain-proof large portions of the existing track by laying down … [Read more...] about Extreme Addo Mountain Bike Challenge

So The Herald report on Gayle van Heerden’s death got you hot under the collar

27 August 2012 By Alan Straton

Gayle van Herden Herald Article 22 August 2012

Big Deal. Or is it? The lines between privacy and publicity have blurred completely. These days one can at will see; a Royal Burning Bush, despicable violence, snuff movies, naked humans doing the most strange things, unspeakable cruelty to animals, the list goes on. I received a chain e-mail this Saturday past, sent under the hand of Dave and Elisabeth Russell and dealing with the "Misrepresentation of Gayle van Heerden's death" - via a 'report' by Gareth Wilson that was published on 22 … [Read more...] about So The Herald report on Gayle van Heerden’s death got you hot under the collar

Friday Rant – Herald, BRT, Home Affairs

8 June 2012 By Alan Straton

Alan Mounter

Home Affairs: So my son of 20 years of age goes down to Home Affairs to apply for a passport. Before he goes he makes sure that he has the required copies, images and black pen. He gets the required forms, fills in the required information and proceeds to the fingerprinting department. There is one other gentleman sitting there. The fingerprinting official enters and observing that the gentleman has no forms and proceeds to help my son. The formless (gormless?) individual … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – Herald, BRT, Home Affairs

Alan Mounter – Hero of Richmond Hill

8 June 2012 By Port Elizabethan

It is with great concern and absolute horror that I read the article regarding Alan Mounter in this morning’s Herald (7 June 2012). The first thought that came to mind was “how dare they”, how dare they dig up old trash in order to further the sales of their newspaper or taking up the crusade of one individual, without taking into consideration the opinion of the rest of Richmond Hill residents. To set the record straight, Alan Mounter is not employed by the residents as a security guard nor … [Read more...] about Alan Mounter – Hero of Richmond Hill

Just When you Thought it had Gone Quiet on Ken Denton

14 September 2011 By Alan Straton

Here are virtually all the Denton/Herald articles from 2002 to 2009 - about 90% of which I have trawled through manually in 2009 on the old Herald site. I used this for the basis of my first letter and also to acquaint myself with this whole SAGA! Yes, as you will read, it has been a saga! This PDF is a perfect illustration of and testament to the character of this 'businessman' called Kenneth Denton. The last 12 years of reportage are proof positive of this man's intentions with … [Read more...] about Just When you Thought it had Gone Quiet on Ken Denton

We Should Thank Nceba Faku

30 May 2011 By Alan Straton

There is no denying that the utterances of Comrade Giraffe, Nceba Faku, has swung a stadium full of spotlights onto the four main protagonists in this tussle of the dung beetles - The Herald, Nceba Faku, the ANC and Port Elizabeth - please note that only The Herald and Nceba Faku are identified as the famous Addo flightless elephant poo rollers. A long long time ago and in a suburb far far away I was told that the only form of bad advertising was NO advertising. The inference at the time was … [Read more...] about We Should Thank Nceba Faku
