Port Elizabeth - Dressed in suit and tie and on his way to choir practice at church, Esau Uithaler's life was cut short when he was gunned down in front of his house on Tuesday evening. Nelson Mandela Bay police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said Uithaler, 33, was gunned down in Reginald Street, Helenvale in the Northern Areas as he was leaving home to go to church. Two killed in Helenvale

Port Elizabeth - Two men have been killed in yet another shooting in the northern areas of Nelson Mandela Bay. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Alwin Labans said a man wearing a balaclava fired several shots at a 48-year-old man in Kobus Road, Helenvale, at around 14:30 on Friday. The man, identified as taxi owner Graham Slabbert, was hit multiple times and died at the scene. MBDA Assumes Responsibility for Helenvale Urban Renewal

The Nelson Mandela Bay Council has approved the transfer of responsibility together with the staff and funds for the Helenvale Urban Renewal Project (HURP) to the Mandela Bay Development Agency. The Helenvale project was launched in 2007 following a visit by then President Thabo Mbeki and a recent study suggests that there could be as many as 30 000 people living in the suburb, although the 2001 Census put the figure at 14 600. The handover of a fully equipped container, safety equipment and communication tools by Portfolio Chairperson for Safety and Security, Bicks Ndoni, today herald in a new era for this crime-ridden community.
