Safety Together

2 July 2012 By Alan Straton

Oosterland Traffic Safety

Look left, then right... Even though their 'cars' were of the one-wheeled variety and their traffic snarls were easily untangled by the kindly officers on duty, the children of Oosterland Youth Centre in Despatch, near Port Elizabeth, now understand Goodyear's message of 'Safety Together'. The mini motorists and pint-sized pedestrians had heaps of fun learning about the rules of the road when they attended a special traffic safety day sponsored by Goodyear.  The Centre has long enjoyed … [Read more...] about Safety Together

No Sponsor for the 2013 Kings, Yet

25 June 2012 By Alan Straton

At the Springboks England game on Saturday, my mate Francois De Wet (#DieSonSienAlles), pointing at signage in the stadium, asked me if I knew anything about these 'new sponsors' for the Kings ascension into Super Rugby in 2013. Looking at the signage it certainly seemed as though the Eastern Province Rugby Union, the Kings and Uitenhage based Goodyear had sprung a hijack marketing coup with signage all along the entire east sidewall of the stadium advertising Goodyear, Kings and … [Read more...] about No Sponsor for the 2013 Kings, Yet

Maybe We Should Revive the Government Apprenticeship Program

11 June 2012 By Alan Straton

Everton Fischer

Practical experience in the apprenticeship program up until 1995, when Government withdrew funding, demonstrated that businesses was producing a valuable and steady contribution to the country's engineering skills pool. After 1995 the stream of qualified personnel with immediately useable skills dwindled. Uitenhage based Goodyear Plant Engineer Titch Booth said the company had closed its original apprentice school in 1995 after government withdrew funding for apprentice programmes, but had … [Read more...] about Maybe We Should Revive the Government Apprenticeship Program

4 June 2012 By Alan Straton

Find It Fix It

A smarter, safer way to move green tyres from one machine to another has not only made a positive difference to tyre builders in Goodyear's Uitenhage manufacturing plant, it has also earned the facility top spot in the company's global ergonomic challenge. The addition of an automated tyre chute and lifting mechanism, which makes it quicker and less physically taxing for tyre builders to shift heavy Wrangler tyres between stages, scooped first prize in Goodyear's regional Ergonomic 'Find … [Read more...] about Third Place for Local Tyre Builder’s Innovation

These Boots Were Made for Walking

4 October 2011 By Alan Straton

Beulah Lumkwana and Lizl Muller

Just where do used safety boots go when they fail to pass the "I dropped my tyre iron on my toe cap and it hurt" stage? Goodyear's factory employees have again donated dozens of used, but still tough, safety shoes to those who may otherwise go barefoot in the Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch areas. The company's stringent health and safety policies dictate that employees who are required to wear safety footwear in the plant receive a new pair every year. Many of the used shoes still … [Read more...] about These Boots Were Made for Walking

9 September 2011 By Alan Straton

As leader in environmental excellence Uitenhage based Goodyear has put its money where its mouth is by launching the first community environmental project of its kind in the Eastern Cape yesterday in partnership with The Waste Trade Company and Die Burger. This initiative, dubbed Project Groenspoor (green track), was launched with a suitable youthful logo at the Albertyn Primary School in Uitenhage - the home of Goodyear's only tyre manufacturing plant in Africa. 9 August 2011 By Alan Straton

A barrier-breaking initiative at Goodyear is giving employees on the factory production line a chance to connect directly with dealers and end users on the retail shop floor ... and to listen to the 'voice of the customer'. In fact, this innovative programme is called just that: Voice of the Customer. Chris Tye, Goodyear National Customer Services Manager, has been instrumental in adapting the global programme - which is shared as best practice throughout the Goodyear group - and driving it … [Read more...] about Meet the Actual Guy That Made Your Tyre

I am Smiling

16 February 2011 By Alan Straton

When renowned racing driver Sarel van der Merwe took delivery of his new, go-anywhere Volkswagen Amarok this week, he drove it straight to Hi-Q Walmer Park, Port Elizabeth, to change its tyres to Goodyear Wranglers. The founder and host of the exciting Spirit of Africa events, Van der Merwe insisted that, for his off-road adventures especially, his trust lies solely in Goodyear Wrangler products. He requested a full set of Wrangler AT/SA 265/65R17 tyres to replace those originally fitted to … [Read more...] about I am Smiling
