Since their establishment in May last year, more than 28 tons of waste have already gone into Goodyear‘s unique waste recycling facilities, assisting not only the health of the environment but also the welfare of needy community projects.

The innovative tyre company is the only manufacturer in the Eastern Cape to offer such a facility to employees, their families and the general public. The project’s specially streamed bins are located at the plant in Uitenhage, providing an easy collection point for recyclable waste.

Goodyear‘s waste collection programme has an added bonus in that funds generated from the sale of waste to specialist recycling companies are ploughed directly back into needy local charities and community projects.

Pamela Moodley, Goodyear Risk Control Manager, said the facility’s success was largely thanks to the active participation of Goodyear employees and the community.

“Globally, Goodyear aims for ‘zero waste to landfill’ and ‘zero harmful emissions’ in its tyre manufacturing processes. Here in South Africa, Goodyear is currently the only manufacturer across all industries that can boast a true zero waste policy. This is thanks to innovative developments in materials and processes, as well as our determination to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible.

“However, as environmental awareness grows, more people would like to contribute personally to the health of planet. We could all recycle our domestic waste, but there are simply not sufficient collection bins available publicly. Since Goodyear already recycles factory and office waste, it made sense for us to extend the collection system to the greater community and encourage good recycling habits,” she said.

“We can all feel good about the success of this project. The recycling is reducing global warming, keeping our landfills from overflowing, improving the quality of our groundwater and reducing air
pollution!”
