16 Days of Activism should not be a box-ticking exercise

11 December 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women and children drew to a close yesterday, but we must never lose sight of the fact that we should be active in the fight against this scourge, and the horrors of gender-based violence, every hour of the day and every day of the year. There is no pause in women and children abuse; they are violated throughout the year. Therefore, there should not be a pause in the actions taken to put a stop to these atrocities! We cannot … [Read more...] about 16 Days of Activism should not be a box-ticking exercise

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the swift arrest of a suspect in the brutal, violent killing of a mother and five of her children, including a six month old baby, in their home at Dabekweni Locality in Kwaaiman, near Mqanduli, in the Eastern Cape. DAWN EC condemns the senseless killings of women and children in our country. These acts of violence are unacceptable and can no longer be overlooked by the uncaring ANC government. Dear MyPE Today, 25 November 2020, South Africa launches 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children while the majority of our women and children are not enjoying their constitutional rights to freedom and safety. Women and children are being kidnapped, raped and killed on a daily basis and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has long ago reached crisis proportions – with the Eastern Cape being a particular hotspot for these heinous crimes. Government must act now against gender-based violence

9 August 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Today we commemorate Women’s Day, but as the scourge of violence against women and children escalates in the Eastern Cape, and across the country, it is very difficult to celebrate this day that so many brave women fought for. Women and children are being kidnapped, raped and killed on a daily basis and gender-based violence (GBV) has long ago reached crisis proportions – with the Eastern Cape being a particular hotspot for these heinous crimes. The recently released crime … [Read more...] about Government must act now against gender-based violence

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The fight against the scourge of sex-for-jobs and sex-for-houses has gained new momentum after the Commission for Gender Equality agreed to assess claims of these practices taking place in the Eastern Cape. On 13 June 2019 I was joined by DA Eastern Cape Provincial Leader, Nqaba Bhanga MPL, in meeting with a delegation from the Commission in East London. (See invitation attached here) In April 2019 the DA Women’s Network (DAWN) in the Eastern Cape wrote to the Commission to … [Read more...] about Commission for Gender Equality to assess investigation regarding sex-for-jobs and sex-for-houses in EC

Dear MyPE Today, 14 February 2018, I was joined by Nomafrench Mbombo, DAWN Federal Leader, in discussing women’s issues with the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay. Whilst interacting with students, we also underlined that the practice of … [Read more...] about Sex-for-jobs a daily struggle for EC women

EPWP Sex for Jobs Scandal

30 January 2019 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Today, 30 January 2019, I conducted an oversight inspection at New Life, Reeston in East London. I encountered women who have been approached to sleep with men if they want jobs within the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) of the Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works. This is illegal and inhumane. The practice of trading sexual favours for jobs has found a foothold across the province and has now been brought to the fore in the Buffalo City Metro (BCM). I also … [Read more...] about EPWP Sex for Jobs Scandal
