Dear MyPE
The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the swift arrest of a suspect in the brutal, violent killing of a mother and five of her children, including a six month old baby, in their home at Dabekweni Locality in Kwaaiman, near Mqanduli, in the Eastern Cape.
DAWN EC condemns the senseless killings of women and children in our country. These acts of violence are unacceptable and can no longer be overlooked by the uncaring ANC government.
We call on the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, to ensure similar police responsiveness and urgency with other cases of violence against women and children.
As we observe 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children it is clear that the majority of our women and children are being deprived of their constitutional rights to freedom and safety.
In the first quarter of 2020/2021 the murder rate for women in the Eastern Cape increased by 17% and in September 2020 it was reported in the media that crimes against children from 1 April to 30 June 2020 increased by 12.3% compared to the same period last year.
Our women and children are being raped and murdered and are not safe in their homes and communities. There is no pause in women and children abuse, they are violated throughout the year.
DAWN EC will intensify our call to the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, to ensure that he appoints a Children’s Commissioner in the Eastern Cape.
Numerous promises have been made by President Cyril Ramaphosa, but there hasn’t been any implementation, nothing concrete that has been done to curb the scourge of violence against women and children.
DAWN EC recommits itself to bringing an end to gender-based violence.
Enough is enough!
Regards
Cllr Georgina Faldtman
DA Women’s Network EC Provincial Chairperson
