Disabled Bay residents receive new lease on life
One hundred people with disabilities got a new lease on life yesterday when they received wheelchairs as part of the SPAR Wheelchair Wednesday initiative at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The initiative, which required able-bodied business people to spend four hours in a wheelchair completing various tasks, served to create awareness of the real-life challenges faced by people with disabilities. Although it was the third edition of the campaign, SPAR has been the title … [Read more...] about Disabled Bay residents receive new lease on life

Killer Whales Supporting the Handicapped
On Saturday 27 April 2013 in the Aghullas current off of Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, Expert Tours guide, Rainer Schimpf and a German Film Crew witnessed two firsts as a pod of 7 Killer Whales (Orcas) hunted a Brydes Whale and then demonstrated that their complex social structures also seem to extend to caring for the handicapped. In waves of 3.5 metre in height and in pursuit of a bait-ball sighting Schimpf observed large splashes ahead of his boat which were quickly established as Orca's … [Read more...] about Killer Whales Supporting the Handicapped
And in BAD News for the MyPE Traffic Hooligans ….
Coega is now taking driver training to new levela and training people with disabilities. This, of course, means that I will be out vigorously defending the right of disabled people to have their parking free at all times. Remember; "No STICKER, No PARK"! In a first for the Eastern Cape, the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has broadened its driver training programme to include customised training - and driver simulators - for people with disabilities. The programme was launched today … [Read more...] about And in BAD News for the MyPE Traffic Hooligans ….
Peep into the world of the Disabled
Ja, ja, ja - here he goes with the speech again I can hear you say............ Those people who park in disabled parking spaces really get my knickers in a knot - they are probably the same ones that drive 1 kilometre to the gym and get highly irritated when they cannot park at the entrance. My young niece, Emily has also joined in the cause and sent me two images that she found on the internet. One image came from a blog by Katie called, Hedgehog Blog. Katie says; "Welcome to the chaos … [Read more...] about Peep into the world of the Disabled
How I got Caught
One of my more idiot savant tendencies is to stand up for the disabled by preventing people not authorised to do so from parking in spots reserved for disabled people. Today I am still kicking myself for realising that I am a bleeding heart liberal prejudiced white male - although I am not too sure which word I should place my 'ist' at the end of. On occasion the Longhair, her Apprentice and I like to stroll to the shops with the hairy four legged monsters in tow. Last night we popped … [Read more...] about How I got Caught
I get my revenge on selfish able bodied disabled parker
We live in a wonderful country with a wonderful constitution and incredibly friendly people who have overcome racism and prejudice in what other countries term a miracle. I am sorry to say, though, that to this day there are still people who continue to cling to a racist and prejudical past and none more so than those able bodied people who insist on parking in the disabled parking bays. This past Friday I observed a woman park her silver double cab in the disabled parking close to the … [Read more...] about I get my revenge on selfish able bodied disabled parker

Disabled Golf Humewood 5th June 2011
Eastern Province Disabled golf held their 2nd Regional Golf day on the Humewood links, Sunday 5th June. The day started off in clear and fresh conditions but as the morning progressed the reliable westerly came up and put the golfers to the test. I had the honour of playing alongside Graham Gouws a disabled player, playing with one hand only and was awestruck at how these golfers wont let their disability stop them from having a great round of golf.
