Strong wind blows out series swim

27 October 2014 By Alan Straton

Ocean Racing Series
Start of the aQuellé 5km Beach Run

On-shore winds of up to 60km/h denied swimmers the opportunity to take part in the 2nd round of the popular aQuellé Ocean Racing Series™ on Sunday morning as all ocean events were cancelled and just the 3 beach events took place on a wind swept Hobie Beach.

Despite the poor beach weather, just over 200 participants still braved the conditions to take part in the 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and the ever popular 1km Kids Beach Run whilst organisers, together with the lifeguards from Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club and Coastal Water Rescue, made the correct decision in cancelling the 2km and 1km Ocean Swim events.

SA age group 15km, half-marathon and marathon record holder, Margie Saunders, took advantage of the switch from swimming to running and triumphed in the Ladies 5km Beach Run in a time of 18 min 42 seconds wtih Samantha Hewitson (23:17) and Susan Derbyshire (23:42) taking up the remaining podium positions. 15 year old Dylan Finlay won his second consecutive 5km Beach Run in a time of 15:16 ahead of Frederick Jantjies (15:19) and JC Visser (15:55). The 5km Beach Walk saw Milé Vermaak claiming her second win in as many races in a time of 33:32 from Helen Schuck and Michelle Geel whilst Christian Schuck took the honours in the Men’s Walk ahead of Colin Korkie and Johan Ferreira.

Always a lot of fun is the aQuellé Kids 1km Beach Run or walk for kids 12 years and under which was once again well supported. In the 6 and under age group category the top 3 in the boys division were Aiden Joubert, Jarryd Hoppner and Thando Opperman whilst Tayla Wilson, Hope Meyer and Shasmeen Botha grabbed the medals in the girls division. For boys 7 to 8 years it was Jayson Archibald, Luke Maguire and Matthew Hume whilst in the girls it was Abbie Mitchell, Amber Joubert and Jorja Parker-Nance. The 9 to 10 age group was strongly contested with Tristan van Aardt, Matthew Loon and Connor Craig taking the honours in the boys division with Zanri Black, Jessica Orrey and Lara Kleinhans getting the girls medals. The 11 to 12 age group saw Tiaan Black, Bradley Bosman and Daniel Bardnardt getting the boys medals with Kayla Ferreira, Annemieke Mock and Tara Sacke filling the podium on the girls side.

With over R5,000 in lucky draw prizes up for grabs each week and a R1,000 cash, participants really enjoyed the increased winners odds this week. The Series has a development program called the Masakhane Future Stars which affords black and coloured children the opportunity to take part in the Series every race day. This program this year is backed by Pagdens Attorneys and has over 35 kids enrolled, the bulk of whom come from the Joe Slovo area.

The Aquellé Ocean Racing Series returns in just under two weeks time for Round 3 on Sunday 9th November at Hobie Beach. The Series is open to all with a Series membership fee of just R50 (register online at www.oceanracingseries.com) and race days entry fees of just R60 for the water events, R40 for the beach events and R30 for the kids 1km beach run.
