Dear Editor
South Africa will be hosting its first ever Anti- Apartheid Conference, to be held in Johannesburg from the 10th to the 12th of May 2024.
The conference marks the launch of the Global Anti -Apartheid Movement to hold Israel accountable for its war crimes and genocide against Palestinians. The conference program will see international Palestinian and South African activists take sessions and lead on legal, political narrative and activism to dismantle Israeli apartheid and colonialism.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) already pronounced on a case of plausible genocide against Israel on 26 January 2024 and will face a full hearing on the matter in due course. The Court issued strong interim measures against the Israeli government and military but despite a world court ruling, Israel continues to flagrantly disregard international law and its instruments. The ethnic cleansing of Palestinians did not start on 7 October 2023, rather it is an ongoing Nakba (catastrophe) that has been ongoing since 1948 and one which needs to end with justice for Palestinians once and for all. In addition, not only Israel but all other countries assisting in the ongoing genocide in Gaza must be held accountable.
The North End Congregational Church, in collaboration with other Pro-Palestine solidarity inter-faith groups as well as the office of the Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, will be hosting Dr Munther Isaac, Lusy Thulgeya and Mohanad AlQaisi, before the commencement and their participation in the conference on the second leg of their tour in South Africa. The dialogue will end at lunch time with a visit to the senior leadership of the Nelson Mandela University to have talks on the university’s role in academic boycotts to end apartheid in Israel. The visit is thus quite historical and will ensure that justice becomes integral on the path to liberation for Palestinians. South Africa is best placed to lead on this international conversation and can offer sound advice in this regard.
The stature of Reverend Munther Isaac in occupied Palestine has been compared to that of the late revered Reverend Desmond Tutu of South Africa, while the presence of Palestinians Thulgeya and AlQaisi present a unique opportunity to further one’s knowledge and insight on the Palestinian struggle and to support the call for the liberation of Palestine in particular.
