Seconds Out, Round Number 7

16 February 2011 By Zports

Africa’s largest family lifestyle beach event, the Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series, returns to Hobie Beach on Sunday morning for Round 7. Strong competition in the ocean swims are anticipated ahead of next Sunday’s SPAR Redhouse River Mile. Leading the local challenge for the River Mile is overall Series 1km swim leader, Chris van de Sande and he is expected to put in another winning performance on Sunday morning. van de Sande has been in a class of his own in the 1km swims this season and will be confident of maintaining this momentum through to the River Mile.

Amongst the ladies, Series leader Carmel Billson can expect a strong challenge from her sister Lauren on Sunday morning whilst the 3km swim is wide open with defending Series champion Jessica Roux away in Durban for the remainder of the Season training with the national swimming coach. Out of the water, it’s 5km beach run specialist Marinus Johnson who will be keen to continue an unbeaten run since December 2007. The 5km Beach Run continues to draw the runners to the beach and Sunday should see another great turnout from the runners and fun walkers who do the 5km Beach Walk. Kids 12 years and under have their own 1km beach run and prize giving with around 100 youngsters expected to pack the Metro’s prime beach.

“Despite the Series having been dogged by really poor weather this season, we are happy to continue to draw the crowds to Hobie Beach as we try and showcase the Metro on national television as Africa’s water sport capital.” said Series director Mike Zoetmulder of Zports.

Entry into the event on Sunday morning at Hobie Beach is open to all with entry available on the Beach from 7.30am. Call Zports on 041 484 7860.

Chris van de Sande current EP 5km and 3km Champion
