The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s environmental awareness campaign, All Hands on Waste, received prominence recently when an Environmental Expo was held in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), the Department of Education and Buyisa e-Bag.
Executive Director of Public Health, Dr Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni, said the vision of the project is to change attitudes within the community regarding the management of waste; it is anticipated this will be achieved by raising awareness and educating communities on good waste management practices as well as to acknowledge ongoing improvements in waste management initiatives undertaken by local and metropolitan municipalities.
In 2009 the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality won the Cleanest City Competition and decided to use the prize for the extensive All Hands on Waste, a waste education drive.
After the successful launch of the All Hands on Waste project in April 2010, the second phase, geared at schools, taxi ranks, community halls, libraries, clinics and other public amenities, commenced already and culminated in a very exciting competition for schools.
The winners, who took part in four categories for grades 1-3 and 4-7, were announced at an event that was well received at the Peter Rademeyer Hall in Algoa Park. Krishay Watkins (grade 4) from Sanctor Primary won the story writing category for grades 4-7 and Josh Gardner from Astra Primary penned the best story in the same category for grades 1-3.
Tabita Tobi (grade 7) from Astra Primary took the top honours in the Spot the Difference category, with Desain Malgas (grade 6) the victor in the Naming the Character category.
Councillor Nomonde Mhlobiso said; “The initiative by the Waste Management sub-directorate will go a long way in assisting the municipality in service delivery.
“If the programme is rolled out successfully to all the wards in the city, illegal dumping will soon be a thing of the past.
“It has been an eye opener even for us as the political leadership, we will definitely take what we have learnt here and use it in the areas we serve,” Councillor Mhlobiso added.
