Saturday Sailing? Sound Cool?

21 August 2014 By Alan Straton

In addition to my responsibilities to MyPE et al I was recently elected Commodore of ABYC – for those of you who prefer chasing a little white ball with a stick, the position is akin to the Captain of a Golf Club. Did you know that Golf is a game played by people unable to sail?

As long time members of the yacht club the Longhair and I pour our efforts into the club and are looking forward to a magnificent 2015 in terms of sailing events – the Vasco Da Gamma Race (from Durban to Port Elizabeth) will finish here, the 2015 505 World Championships will take place in Port Elizabeth over two weeks in March and April (we are expecting around 100 two man boats and 300 foreign tourists to descend on our fair city).

Along with the above we have a packed sailing calendar of local races and Wednesday social sailing (Contact me if you would like to take your clients / employees for a sail)

The reason why the Algoa Bay Yacht Club exists is simply stated in the constitution; “To foster an interest in sailing”. To that end the ABYC hosts a weekly sailing school for all interested parties – mainly youth, though – every Saturday during the Sailing Season. The sailing school is not held on days when regattas are held.

Anyone interested in sailing as a sport is welcome to take part and the club extends an open invitation to all.

Non-members wishing to take part in the sailing school are charged a small fee.

Sailing school instruction and use of club boats is free for ABYC members.

Instruction takes place within the confines of the harbour and within site of the Chartroom Restaurant and Deck allowing parents to relax and observe their children.

Sailing has been credited with assisting children with a number of skills: Motor, Mathematics and Science.

Sailing teaches children confidence and responsibility as well as being a healthy outdoor sport that takes place within the confines of a safe area amongst like minded peers.

Instruction starts at 10h00 and ends at 12h00.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
