Sailing in Gqeberha LEADS the Way

2 November 2021 By Alan Straton

Offshore sailing in Nelson Mandela Bay has been through many ups and downs these last few years.

The now defunct Algoa Bay Yacht Club was based in the Port of Port Elizabeth for 57 years and chucked out by Transnet over a rental dispute.

A new sailing club was established by members – Sailing PE – and this band if dedicated sailors continued sailing on Algoa Bay and taking part in many offshore regattas. from 1 to 4 October 2021 Sailing PE, in conjunction with the Redhouse Yacht Club hosted a very successful National Regatta – the Laser Nationals.

At a club meeting last night the Commodore of Sailing PE announced that Sailing Port Elizabeth would henceforth be renamed as the Gqeberha Yacht Club.

Well done to this band of sailors for embracing the name change of Port Elizabeth so publicly and visibly.

Mark Dawson, Gqeberha Yacht Club Commodore said; “In continuing with the transformation theme, Port Elizabeth has been through the name change procedures. SailingPE will now been known as Gqeberha Yacht Club. Although there has been resistance to the cities name change, and there remain valid queries over the change, we feel that the best way to continue to grow sailing in the city is to take where we have come from and grow with the cities new identity. We have been engaging with a number of local businesses over the last few weeks and the general consenus is one of great support. There are a number of businesses that are supporting our members by offering discounts on products and equipment on presentation of a yacht club membership card, and others that we are still in discussion with.”

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
