Metro Executive Mayor, Cllr Athol Trollip, and Municipal Public Accounts (MPAC) Chairperson, Cllr Lance Grootboom, have today announced various action steps outlined in the Kabuso Report.
After ten years of inaction from former governments, finally justice will prevail for the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay who were deprived of opportunities and proper service delivery as a result of corruption.
The Kabuso Report collected dust under former government that didn’t hold anyone to account. We as the coalition government will not spend all our time looking backwards, but we will certainly not sweep anything under the carpet.
Those liable will be called to account and action will be taken where legally possible.
As such, our resolution to the City Manager recommends various action steps against individuals and companies that are mentioned in the Kabuso report and that are traceable.
Given the amount of time that has elapsed since many of these acts of alleged maladministration and corruption took place, several items cannot be pursued due to missing evidence or untraceable defendants.
However, we have proposed that matters for which evidence existed and defendants traceable be pursued.
From the report, 6 items have been identified for investigation and possible action. These were selected on the basis that legal opinion or evidence exist to motivate further action against individuals or companies that are traceable.
After almost a ten year of wait, remedial action will be taken in respect of some of the matters outlined in the Kabuso Report.
This coalition government has a zero tolerance approach to corruption.
