Repairs on the Lower Sundays River Canal in full swing

The second phase of repairs at the Korhaansdrift/ Scheepersvlakte Canal which resumed on Monday 29 July 2024 is advancing steadily. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Engineering, Cllr Khanya Ngqisha together with the Senior Director for Water and Sanitation, Barry Martin led the on-site visit to the Sundays River Canal to review the progress made.

The scope of the work includes:

  • Reinforcement of the HDPE liner on both the upstream and downstream tie-ins
  • Installation of a sub-soil drainage system in the downstream tie in

The shutdown is intended to ensure the tie-in infrastructure is secure until the permanent concrete sections are installed during the next shutdown period in June/July 2025.

The Sundays River Canal second phase repair work carried a higher possibility of water outages. With 40% of the work completed, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has successfully avoided any major water outages. In the event of unexpected water disruptions, emergency water trucks are on standby to ensure continuous water supply.

“We have prepared well in terms of water distribution before shutting down the canal, the Scheepersvlakte dam was adequately filled. We have enough water to ensure that residents are not adversely affected by the repair work. Therefore, all is in order, we are very happy with the progress,” Cllr Ngqisha said.

Senior Director for Water and Sanitation, Barry Martins ensured that the team is working around the clock to meet the said deadline.

We ask all consumers to use water sparingly during this time to ensure reservoirs do not dry out, completely cutting off water from the normal distribution system.
