Record entry for aQuellé Ocean Racing Series

21 January 2015 By Alan Straton

Record ORS
Hundreds of swimmers set off in Round 7 of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series last Sunday morning.

In absolutely perfect conditions on Sunday morning, the 7th round of the popular aQuellé Ocean Racing Series enjoyed a record entry for Season 10 of just under 550 participants with an increased number of participants from out-of-town and some well known triathletes getting ready for this week’s triathlon in East London.

One of the first timers to the Series, Roxane Theron from the United Kingdom enjoyed her morning at Hobie Beach, “What a great event! I’ve come down from the UK to do half IM and did the 3km swim as a training swim. What a great set up. Wonderfully organised and helpful and friendly staff. Thanks very much to all involved”.

The Series, which is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay and has grown to become Africa’s largest family beach event, is managed by Zsports Events NPC, a local non-profit events company. The company headed by Mike Zoetmulder focuses on fun sports events which give back to the local communities. Zsports are also responsible for the SPAR River Mile Festival and the Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge, two signature events for the city taking place next month.

Round 7 didn’t produce any surprises with the current Series leaders extending their overall lead with some impressive performances. Framesby scholar Brigitte Muller and NMMU student Wayne Jones won the 1km Ocean Swim whilst Kirsten Marriott and Jason Jones won the 3km Ocean Swim. Teenagers Megan Snyman and Dylan Finlay won the 5km Beach Run with Emily Stemmett and Juan Slabbert taking gold in the 5km Beach Walk. The stand-up paddle (SUP) category had no fewer than 9 finishers this week which highlights the growth of this fantastic sport in our city. Marc Kempton-Jones, Michael Klos and Mia Vorster being the top 3 competitors on the day.

Season 10 of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series helps raise awareness to the humanitarian organisation Rotary with donations going to the city’s only breakfast club, the Port Elizabeth Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise. With over R5,000 in prizes and lucky draws each race day, Michael Wallis was the lucky participants winning the fortnightly R1,000 cash prize on Sunday morning. Full results from the Series are available on www.oceanracingseries.com with awesome action pictures available on their Facebook page. The next round of the Series will take place on Sunday 8th February at Hobie Beach starting at 9am.
