A joint crime prevention and law enforcement operation between Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and other law enforcement agencies started off on a successful note on Thursday, 14 December 2023, with three undocumented immigrants arrested and more than R100 000 worth of traffic fines issued.
The operation, which was a partnership between NMBM, Immigration Services, Eastern Cape Traffic Services, SAPS, Border Management Authority and SARS Customs, started on the N2 Neptune Bridge location before moving to the busy Addo Road and R335.
NMBM Metro Police Lieutenant Colonel, Mlindi Mangwane, said the joint operation was aimed at recovering illegal firearms, check vehicle roadworthiness, drivers and arrest undocumented immigrants to ensure a safe festive season for residents and visitors across NMB.
“These efforts are towards crime prevention and ensuring road safety as many people will be on the road ahead of the long weekend. We will continue to hold such operation throughout the festive season and into the new year.
“The operation was a success as we managed to issue traffic fines for various offences, including unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles, unlicenced drivers, damaged tyres, and overloading. In total the fines were valued to be R136 000.
“Three suspects were detained at the Motherwell SAPS after they were found without legal documentation as immigrants, two more were taken in pending the outcome of the immigration documentation,” he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Mangwane called on everyone to adhere to the rules of the road. He stressed the importance of intergovernmental relations, saying everyone must play their part.
“We value these partnerships as they work towards a common goal; to make sure the Bay remains a friendly city where crime has no place,” Mangwane said.
