The stately Queen Mary will return to the shores of Port Elizabeth on Sunday 29 January 2017, leaving in the evening later that same day. The best place to watch the departure from will be the Algoa Bay Yacht Club (Bookings).
The Queen Mary almost brought the PE Waterfront to a standstill on 7 April 2013 during her first visit to the Port of Port Elizabeth.
At the time the Algoa Bay Yacht Club reported hundreds of spectators on the deck enjoying sundowners as the Queen Mary departed for Cape Town.
Two years later the reception was no less frenetic as the Queen Mary glided into the Port on 15 April 2015.
Her arrival in the city is a little earlier than before but almost slap bang in the middle of the passenger liner season which stretches from October until April each year. The passenger liners benefit the city by bringing in excess of 20 000 visitors (including crew) to our shores along with revictualling, berthing fees and support services spend.
In testament to the luxury on-board, the Queen Mary has capacity for 2 620 passengers who are attended to by 1 253 officers and crew.
Passengers onboard will get to choose from a number of Port Elizabeth destinations including excursions to:
- Kariega Game Reserve
- Port Elizabeth Highlights: Campanile Monument (Built in 1923, it commemorates the landing of the first British settlers who arrived in 1820), Summerstrand, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Campus, Shark Rock Pier, City Centre (Library, Post Office and City Hall), Donkin Memorial (a stone pyramid erected in memory of Sir Rufane Donkin’s wife Elizabeth, whom Port Elizabeth was named after), Fort Frederick, St George’s Cricket Ground and final stop the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
- Pumba Game Reserve
- Amakhala Game Reserve
- Township Experience: Missionvale, Govan Mbeki Township, Kwadwesi and Kwa Magxaki, Njoli Square, a local school, a gallery of township artists in the squatter camp, Rhamaphosa Village, Red Location.
