The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum has been running a public art exhibition taking visitors on “a journey from the colonial past into the present”.
The exhibition, involving a “tour” of Nelson Mandela Bay, started on 12 February and is scheduled to run until 17 April 2011. The exhibition features a timeline giving locations and brief descriptions of notable public art in the Bay: monuments, memorials and commissions, from the Donkin Pyramid, built in 1820, to the Bay’s newest and brightest sculptures on the Donkin Reserve. From Uitenhage to Summerstrand, and everywhere in between, this exhibition provides a fun and informative view of the city.
Also on show are historical and contemporary paintings and photographs drawn from the Art Museum‘s permanent collection.
The public is invited to imagine artworks from the Museum’s collection as public works on a grand scale and placed in selected areas of the city.
Taking place in conjunction with the exhibition is an Art Forum at which experts will discuss issues and topics relating to public art. The forum takes place on 11 April and will be accompanied by a practical workshop on moulding and casting techniques from 4 to 6 April 2011.
Two walkabouts which focus on shared histories will be held during April. The first, on 4 April, will include monuments, memorials and heritage sites and the second, held on 16 of April, will focus on Central and, in particular, the Donkin reserve.
To book for the Art forum, workshop or tours contact the Art Museum.
