Provincial and City Leaders back the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer

An event that has nearly 12 000 pairs of feet pounding the Port Elizabeth beachfront for a greater cause is back for the 18th consecutive year with the full support of Provincial and City Leaders.

“I rallied all the Eastern Cape Provincial Government Departments to support this walk, because I believe that this event is changing mind-sets when it comes to healthy living and reinforcing a culture of unity, making a positive difference in our province. This event is evidence of what can be achieved  when important stakeholders in our country work together including the community, government, municipality, non-profit organisations and media,” says Eastern Cape Provincial Leader, Premier Phumulo Masualle.

The 5 km Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, which is supported by the Eastern Cape Department of Health, is one of the biggest charity events in the Eastern Cape.

Beneficiaries in 2016 are the Igazi Foundation, CANSA and CHOC (Children of Cancer).

Cancer is a disease that affects everyone – even if we have not been diagnosed with cancer ourselves, we have a family member or friend who has,” says Algoa FM Managing Director, Dave Tiltmann.

The target is to have over 12 000 walkers at the 8am start at The Boardwalk in Summerstrand on 29 October 2016.

“As a community, we need to choose life everyday by making sure that we are living a healthy lifestyle.  We need to make positive changes; we must know our health status, do our health screenings and tests regularly and exercise,” says Eastern Cape MEC of Health, Dr. Pumza Dyantyi.

“The three beneficiaries chosen for 2016 do incredible work for people young and old who are diagnosed with cancer.

“Together with the support of the EC Department of Health, Cell C Aquelle´, our community TV station BAYTV,  and of course our most important stakeholder, the community – we are making a difference in the lives of those diagnosed with cancer,” says Tiltmann.

“As a radio station we’re committed to continue growing the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer to raise awareness and to support the organisations involved in fighting the disease, and with the Province and City supporting us, the event can only grow. It is a fight we can win!”

The entry fee for the walk is R60 per walker.  People can still enter on Saturday, 29 October 2016 from 06h00-07h30.
