Power Being Restored After Outages In Summerstrand And Surrounding Areas

On 10 October 2024, a widespread power outage was experienced in Summerstrand and the surrounding areas, disrupting electricity supply to several residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Electricity and Energy Directorate promptly dispatched a technical team to investigate the fault and initiate repair operations.

Upon receiving reports of the outage, the technical team conducted an immediate on-site investigation. A comprehensive assessment of the affected infrastructure was performed, lasting until late into the night. Specialised teams inspected the 132kV transmission lines and associated equipment to identify potential causes.

Following a detailed inspection, the fault was traced to internal cracks within the 132kV insulators supporting the transmission lines in the affected areas. These internal cracks compromised the integrity of the insulators, leading to interruptions in the power supply.

Based on the findings, the following corrective actions are currently being undertaken to restore power:

  • Replacement of Defective Insulators: The scope of work was defined as the replacement of the identified defective 132kV insulators. A specialized team with the necessary equipment and expertise has been mobilized to perform the replacement of insulators across the affected sections of the 132kV Arlington/Summerstrand line.
  • Coordination and Sourcing of Materials: Necessary spare parts and replacement insulators were sourced immediately.
  • Estimated Time of Restoration: The estimated time of restoration is 13:00 on 11 October 2024, based on the team’s assessment of the complexity of the repair.
