James Pienaar and Brett Amsterdam produced fine all-round performances to take Union High to a massive 197-run victory over Marlow Agricultural on the second day of the home & equity Pearson Cricket Festival in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
Jayden Brotherton led the way with the bat for Union by hitting top score of 83 in their innings of 252/6 declared, while Pienaar contributed 40 and Amsterdam made 45.
The pair then shared nine wickets (Pienaar 5/11 and Amsterdam 4/29) as Marlow were bundled out for 79 and 25/5. Under the tournament rules, five second innings wickets constitute a full innings and Pienaar added 3/19 to his first innings contribution for a comfortable win.
On the adjacent field at Pearson, there was a fascinating battle between the hosts and Hudson Park.
With Brad Renkin contributing 68, Pearson totalled a competitive 248 and then had Hudson on the ropes at 12/3.
However, the East London side showed great spirit to keep on fighting to the end, finishing the day on 173/9, thanks to half centuries from Kwakhanya Gcekwa and Lilitha Reed, who was unbeaten and held the innings together in the closing stages.
Muir got the better of Westering in a low-scoring game after just three runs separated the sides following the first innings – Westering 84 against Muir’s 81.
The wickets continued to fall in the second innings as Westering slumped to 44/5, but Muir then steadied things to reach their target of 48 with just one wicket down.
Graeme, Grey High and Somerset College all won their matches on the first innings.
